Your belongings

I moved out most of my things and don’t need to return to get anything, but there may be some items left over in my room. Will I be charged for abandoned personal property?
We are not enforcing the abandoned personal property policy detailed in the housing contracts and will retain student belongings throughout the move-out process. Staff will reach out to residents who have not made plans to move out their remaining belongings later during the move-out period.

When should I get my bike?

You should plan to pick up your bike when you return to move out.

Bikes that are left on racks at the residence halls will be collected in mid-July to prepare for fall semester. Bikes that are not in bike racks are subject to citation and will be impounded. The bike lockers at Briscoe Quad and Union Street Center are managed by RPS. Please work with that department if you are unable to take you bike when you return to move out. Return bike locker keys to RPS.

If your bike does not have a permit, you should email parking enforcement (pkenf@indiana.edu) with a description of the bike, its location, and the serial number as soon you can. Doing this will help establish ownership so you can claim your bike from impound

I’ve moved out but think I forgot a personal item in my room. What should I do?

What happened the microfridge I rented from Bedloft?
RPS staff emptied all microfridges between March 30 and April 7. Arrangements have been made with Bedloft to pick up all units rented from them.

Costs and refunds

How did you calculate the housing refund? (added March 26)
Here is our process for housing refunds:

  • The credit item type will apply to any unpaid charges on the account first.
  • If there is nothing to pay it will be refundable.
  • It will not be automatically refunded until the Fall disbursement date.
  • If the credit pays charges from Spring 2020 or earlier it will not be refunded.
  • If the credit pays summer 2020 or fall 2020 charges it may be refunded on a case-by-case basis. Students can request that at this link request an earlier refund.

The credit amount is derived by multiplying the daily rate of the specific asset type (room or apartment) by the remaining days in the contract. Since President McRobbie’s letter requested students vacate their space by March 20 at 11:59 p.m., we used March 21 as our start date. That equates to 49 days.

What is the cost to remain on campus if my petition is approved?
Students who are approved to remain on campus and must move to a new space will be charged a rate of $20 per day for the remainder of their stay. This rate will replace their current housing charges, not be added to it. Housing charges for the remainder of the semester are being reimbursed. A credit will appear on your statement before the end of the semester.

Residents approved to remain in their unfurnished on-campus apartments will continue to pay their current housing rate.

Will I receive a refund for my housing and dining?
Due to the early move out of residence halls for the spring semester, students will receive a prorated housing credit. This credit will be applied to any unpaid charges on the student’s bursar account. If the credit exceeds the amount due on the student’s account, the excess will be refunded during the first week of the fall 2020 semester. Students may request an earlier refund.

Students approved to remain in their unfurnished on-campus apartments will continue to pay the same housing rate.

Information will be available soon regarding meal plans.

Housing_COVID-19_Move-outBriscoeMap_1920.pngWhere do I go to get my personal belongings?
Report to the fire drive behind Eigenmann Hall. Parking is available in the lots behind the building. Our staff will greet you and be available to assist. You will need to enter the service drive from Tenth St. Call the number posted on the signs. As staff are available, your items will be removed from storage and brought to you.

Why are you asking different groups to come at different times?
Our desire is to have residents who lived in single rooms, or whose roommate(s) already moved out to retrieve items first. This will allow more space for residents whose room contents were packed and moved to Eigenmann Hall with a roommate's belongings to spread out and sort, and repack their belongings.

Can I come to get my belongings before the stay-at-home order is lifted?
For everyone's safety, you should not come to campus before the order is lifted or modified.

What’s happening with my mail?
Mail that can be forwarded through USPS will be forwarded to residents after the stay-at-home order is lifted. Please verify or update your forwarding address online.

What if I can't get to campus to retrieve my belongings?
In the event you are unable to return to pick up your belongings, you should contract with one of the approved vendors to have your items shipped or stored. You can also have a friend, roommate, or relative pick up your belongings by completing a form to authorize them to have access to your property.

What if don't have room to take my bike when I pick up my other belongings?
Please see the section above titled "Getting your belongings".

What if I can't get to campus on any of the available dates?
Please contact us immediately at askRPS and we will work with you to arrange a time for you to return.

Do my roommate(s) and I have to pick up our belongings at the same time?
We prefer for you and your roommate(s) return at the same time so you can sort through your belongings together. If this is not possible, one of you can give authorization to the other to pick up all the contents from your room and you can meet at another place and time to sort your belongings. You might also want to consider contracting with an approved vendor to have your items stored in Bloomington at an off-campus location.

(Updated April 6)

Why are my items being moved out of my room before I can come and pick them up?
As we’ve seen the number of COVID-19 pandemic cases escalate in Indiana, IU and other universities were asked by the state to prepare for the potential of offering special housing provisions in case of an emergency. The time has come for action to help care for the health care workers in our community. IU has entered an agreement with our IU Health partners that establishes Briscoe Quad as a space for medical personnel. Because of Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb’s executive stay-at-home order, we will start packing your belongings this week and will store them on campus until you can safely travel here to pick them up.

If I had made arrangements with one of the preferred vendors, should I contact them to cancel?
Preferred vendors are being allowed move items for those who already had an appointment before IU Health assumes the towers.

Why did IU choose Briscoe as the space for health care employees?
Briscoe’s separate towers offer different spaces for health care workers who need a place to rest between shifts and, if necessary, a space for health care workers who have potentially been exposed to the virus and need to quarantine away from others. This is an ever-evolving situation, and IU is working closely with our local, state, and national public health agencies to make the best decisions for our residents and campus community. Please know that this decision was not easy to make, and we are doing everything in our power to make the move-out process as organized and safe as we can for everyone involved.

I left essential medical and/or academic materials (not available online) in my room. Can you send it to me?
We are no longer shipping essential items. If you need something from your room, please contact us at askRPS.

Why are my items being packed with my roommate’s items?
Because Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced that our state’s current stay at home order has been extended to April 20, and we need to vacate the building before that date, IU has contracted a licensed and insured moving company to pack and move any items currently remaining in Briscoe. The items will be safely moved to a secure storage location on campus, and will be packed by room and not individual student for expediency. We will follow strict care and security protocols to ensure the safety of the campus and local community.

Move-out process

Do I need to clean my room before I leave?
You have a limited amount of time to complete your move-out, so we are not requiring you to clean.

What should I do with RPS library materials I have?
Please return these items to bins at your center desk when you check out. If you have already moved out and took these with you, let us know by completing the askRPS form. At this time, fines are being waived for any overdue items and items returned to the center desks. You should place trash in the appropriate locations for your building.
