Move Out Q&A
When do I need to move out?
Unless you are living with us for summer school, you must move out within 24 hours of completing your last in-person academic experience, i.e. class, exam, or graduation if you are attending commencement. All contracts end at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 8. Those attending commencement, must move out by 12 noon on Sunday, May 9. If the ceremony is delayed due to weather, the move out deadline will be 12 noon on Monday, May 10. If you are scheduled to work commencement or are attending graduation, be sure you register at your center desk to move out after 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 8.
What if I am staying at IU for summer school?
Students with an RPS housing contract for the summer term will be assigned a room in Willkie Quad and may move on Monday, May 10. If you are living off campus, you must move within 24 hours of completing your last in person academic experience. The summer housing application will be available beginning Monday, March 22 at 12 noon.
Is IU doing a de-densified move out?
Yes, we are encouraging a de-densified move out.
Do I have to schedule my move out date/time?
No, we are not requiring a schedule or sign up. If all students use the 24-hour rule, the move out experience should be naturally de-densified.
Will IU provide move out supplies?
Yes, we will provide supplies similar to those available during move in. Carts and dollies are limited and available to be checked out on a first-come, first-serve basis at each center desk.
Can I have assistance moving out?
Yes, you can choose between having two (2) guests help you move out, or using our preferred vendor Guys and Dollies to assist you.
Is there a preferred vendor to help with move out and storage?
Yes, Guys and Dollies is our preferred vendor. You will however still be responsible for packing your own belongings.
Do I need to clean my room before I leave?
You are expected to leave your room in the same condition it was in when you moved in. Before you close the door for the last time:
- Empty drawers, wipe down furniture, vacuum
- Take trash to the trash room or outside dumpster
- Remove everything from your walls
- Empty and unplug Bedloft microfridges
Additional trash bags will be available.
Where can I park to move out?
Beginning Thursday April 29, ST spaces will be open for anyone to park. Enforcement in CH spaces will continue through 5 p.m. Friday, April 30. After that time, CH spaces will be open for anyone to park. Unattended vehicles in the fire drives may be cited.
Policy and Service Changes
Will quiet hours be extended during final exams?
Beginning Sunday, May 2 at 2 a.m., quiet hours will be extended to 24-hours daily. Please be considerate of others as they prepare for final projects and exams. Noise may be documented and referred to the conduct system.
When will dining services end for the semester?
During the week of May 2, IU Dining will begin closing various locations over the course of the week. By Friday, May 7 service will only be available through a few select locations. The closing schedule will be available online and on their social media accounts at:
Do my guests have to test for COVID-19 before helping me move out?
No, guests do not have to be tested upon arrival to campus. They must wear masks and remain socially distanced from others while on campus.
What safety rules will be in place during move out?
No more than two (2) guests per resident may be in the building at one time. Everyone must wear masks, practice social distancing, and wash hands or use hand sanitizer frequently.
Storage and unwanted, lost or missing items
If I am returning for the fall semester to live on campus, can you store my belongings during the summer?
No, we do not allow storage in the residence halls and furnished apartments on campus. You should contact our preferred vendor Guys and Dollies for your storage needs, or investigate local storage facilities.
If I’m returning to the same apartment at the Avenue, can I leave my belongings in my apartment?
Yes, you can make arrangements to leave your belongings in the apartment for an additional fee. Please contact askRPS for additional information.
What happens if I forgot or lost something?
We will hold found items for seven (7) days after move out ends. Please contact your center desk. We will notify you if items are found in your room.
Can I donate items I no longer want?

What happens to my deliveries and mail after I move out?
We recommend that you do not have anything delivered to you on campus after April 30. Any packages not claimed after move out will be returned to sender, they cannot be forwarded to another address.
