Graduate assistantship positions provide a unique opportunity to support students in both their academic and personal growth. In this role, you’ll develop essential skills in time management, presentation, and group facilitation while gaining hands-on experience advising student groups and guiding students through individual and group interactions in a supportive environment.

To be eligible, you must be a full-time graduate student at Indiana University during the assistantship period. The priority deadline to apply is March 3, 2025. All Residence Life graduate assistantships offer similar benefit packages—see below for details on applications and benefits.

Position descriptions:

The Assistant Coordinator for Center Management (ACCM) is a live-in position that partners with the Residence Life professional staff to develop successful academic and residential life experiences for students. Residence Life seeks to cultivate productive and well-rounded citizens through living and learning in the residential environment.

Major responsibilities of the ACCM position include:

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate 4-10 Resident Assistants (RAs) in conjunction with in-center professional staff
  • Design, coordinate, and facilitate student engagement experiences
  • Serve as a member of the center leadership team in management of residence center, including frequent contact with custodial and maintenance staff, communication with housing assignments, dining, and other IU Housing and IU departments
  • Advise and consult residence hall students with social, educational, and academic concerns
  • Duty coverage and crisis intervention
  • Advisorship responsibilities in areas such as student leadership, learning communities, welcome week, and conduct administration
  • Additional opportunities for departmental committee work in areas such as selection, training, residential curriculum, diversity and inclusion, and summer conferences

Candidates for the ACCM position should possess:

  • Previous Residence Life staff experience (i.e. resident assistant) or comparable experience with student leadership or community development
  • Effective supervisory skills (preferably with undergraduate students)
  • Commitment to issues related to social justice and diversity
  • Ability to function independently while at the same time operating in a team dynamic

Position benefits:

  • Designated as a 0.50 FTE assistantship with a commitment of 20 hours per week. Due to the dynamic nature of working with staff and students in residence halls, there may be fluctuations in weekly hours, with Assistant Coordinators occasionally working beyond 20 hours, particularly during training periods in July/August and January.
  • Receive on-campus living accommodations, insurance benefits, the 7-Day Classic Meal Plan, and a cash stipend of approximately $14,400. Professional development funds are also available.
  • Benefit from a tuition fee remission that covers 100% of 24 credit hours during the academic year. Additionally, upon request, Residence Life will cover up to 6 credit hours of tuition and fee remission during the summer session.

The Assistant Coordinator for Community Education (ACCE) is a live-in position that is part of a leadership team which facilitates the CommUNITY Education (CUE) program and reports to the Assistant Director for Residential Engagement, who oversees the CUE program. The mission of the CUE program is to foster respect and understanding in the residence hall communities and to create an environment that welcomes and values all people through intentional educational programming in the residence halls.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Directly supervise, train, and evaluate a staff of 7 CUEs, assist in setting program goals and learning outcomes, convene regular staff and individual meetings, hold CUEs accountable for program expectations, evaluate/assess performance and program effectiveness, and develop and implement ongoing and semiannual training
  • Facilitate a close working relationship with other residence hall staff which includes regular meetings with professional, graduate, and undergraduate staff in each center
  • Identify needs, outcomes, and implementation of training and programs related to community building, engagement, and civil dialogue
  • Develop a greater understanding and appreciation for social justice education and explore skills needed to engage students, staff, and colleagues in difficult conversations
  • In addition to supervising CUEs, each ACCE is occasionally called upon to present programs within the residence halls and in other areas of campus

Candidates for the ACCE position should possess:

  • A deep commitment to community building and social justice
  • A well-defined guiding philosophy about the need for social justice education and some well-developed strategies for delivering such education
  • Experience designing, implementing, and assessing educational programs
  • Effective supervisory skills (preferably with undergraduate students)
  • An ability to function independently while at the same time operating in a dynamic leadership team

Every year we offer three types of positions, one supervises two residence hall libraries, one supervises our apartment housing library (this includes collections and services for all ages), and another supervises our outreach services (this includes regular pop-up libraries around campus). We are looking for qualified students to manage the daily operations of the libraries in these positions. If you can work independently and creatively, have a positive attitude, and are looking for a position to develop a wide range of library skills including management and leadership skills, this position is for you!

Major responsibilities include:

  • Supervision, scheduling, and evaluation of 8-12 hourly library employees.
  • Collection development and management.
  • Creation of monthly active and passive programs.
  • Marketing of library.
  • Creation of relationships and ongoing outreach with the communities within your residence hall.
  • Attendance at regular staff meetings.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation.
  • Administrative duties such as maintaining and reviewing library employees’ timesheets.

Candidate for the Library Supervisor position should possess:

  • Interest in library employment.
  • Desire to learn management, supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Desire to connect and serve the library’s user community.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
  • Ability to organize job duties and work independently.
  • Ability to motivate, establish, and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Creativity to develop and implement library programs and services.
  • Good communication and a positive attitude.

  • Designated as a 0.50 FTE assistantship with a commitment of 20 hours per week.
  • Receive insurance benefits and a cash stipend of approximately $24,000. Professional development funds are also available.
  • Benefit from a tuition fee remission that covers 100% of 24 credit hours during the academic year. Additionally, upon request, Residence Life will cover up to 6 credit hours of tuition and fee remission during the summer session.

Applications for graduate positions for the 2025–26 academic year are currently closed.

Except for applicants to the Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program, where the assistantship process is part of the program admission, the graduate assistantship process for Residence Life is separate from the academic admissions process. To be considered for an assistantship in Residence Life, you must be currently enrolled in a graduate program or in the process of enrolling in a graduate program at Indiana University. First-year law students and first-year MBA students are not eligible for graduate assistantship positions. Preference for interviews may be given to those candidates entering the fields of graduate study in the area of Higher Education and Student Affairs or Counseling and Educational Psychology, but we encourage students from all fields to apply.
