Here to help accommodate students
IU Housing strives to welcome all incoming students to on campus living, including those whose daily lives are affected by a medical need. Review the information below to learn about accommodations and documents that our office needs to best provide you with housing where you can be successful.
If you ever feel lost or don't know where to start in this process, reach out and contact us or call us at 812-855-1764.
Medical and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accommodations
We encourage students to complete and submit our Medical Verification Form (MVF) if you have a disability or chronic medical condition that impacts your daily living environment. Both an MVF and housing contract must be on file for an assignment to be made. Click the button below to fill out the MVF.
Medical Verification Form
Residence halls, furnished apartments, and most unfurnished apartments are equipped with air conditioning. Environmental allergies are commonly aided with personal air purifiers that students are welcome to bring in. Please review the prohibited item list in the Policies section.
Common Types of Accommodations
- Rooms and bathrooms that can accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility devices
- Strobes for fire alarms for hearing loss
- Pillow shakers for hearing loss
- Sharps disposal containers for physician-approved medical needs
- Semi-private or limited-use bathrooms
Adjustments to housing assignments due to health-related symptoms that do not rise to the level of a significant disabling condition, such as living with a particular roommate, religious practices, proximity to academic or campus buildings, or a desire for a quiet/undisturbed place to study, are considered housing preferences. Housing preferences cannot be accommodated through our ADA and Medical Verification Form process.
Submit your completed MVF to request a housing accommodation as soon as possible, but no later than May 15, to give the office time to review, verify, and find reasonable accommodations for you. Forms received after May 15 may not be reviewed or may result in delay of accommodations.
Service Animals and Emotional Support Animals
To bring an established service animal or emotional support animal into on-campus housing, you must contact IU Accessible Educational Services to begin a request to bring the animal. Animals may not be brought to campus until approved by IU Housing.
Dietary Concerns
If dining or allergen accommodations in residential dining locations are required, contact the IU Dining Nutrition staff at nutrinfo@iu.edu or complete the contact form.
